one must always remember to look like a trustworthy and exceptionally kind person. I felt like I was looking sharp today since I just came from work when I helped these two school girls, who are probably in Grade 4 or 5. Boy, was I very wrong.

I just got off the bus. I went straight to our store to have a little chat with my mom (read: I’m asking her for my P16 tricycle fare because being a working girl now, I can’t really afford it. Shame.), which by little I mean talking to her for 30 minutes or longer. We were still talking when these two girls in their red checkered uniforms asked my mom if we have nails.

Girl 1: Ate, may pako po kayo?

Nanay: Wala, anak eh.

Girl 1: Meron po kayong [insert the name of the nail she was looking for because I forgot] ?

Nanay: Wala nga, anak. Dun sa hardware meron (she gestures to the hardware near our store) kaso 9 pa nagbubukas yun. Meron sa loob (she gestures to the entrance of our village) kaso medyo malayo dito.

Girl 1 and Girl 2 leave. Girl 2 tries to convince Girl 1 to go further and explore the unknown to find the hardware store.

When they left, my mom and I watched them venture into the unknown territory that is our village. I told my mom that maybe I should have given them a ride to the hardware store. I was about to ask them, really, but they were already farther from where they originally were so I said if I run into them, I’d give them a ride.

Fast forward, I finally rode the tricycle home and as the girls’ luck would have it, I saw them as they were going back. I knew they didn’t go that far since they were still arguing about whether they should go back or try to find the hardware store. I told the driver to stop and call the two girls then I went up to them and told them to get into the tricycle so I can drop them off.

One of the girls started freaking out, thinking that I was going to kidnap them and do something bad to them. I found it very funny because, um, hello? I was wearing my three-fourths blouse and slacks, paired with my comfy heels (oops,don’t tell my orthopedic surgeon about it) and I’m supposed to kidnap little girls? I told them I just got off work and that I am, for the nth time, not going to kidnap them.

Finally, Girl 1 was convinced that I am just trying to help them out. As we got to the tricycle, I told both girls to sit inside and I’ll just sit at whatever you call that place behind the driver. Girl 1 refused and said she’s just going to stay at the back of the tricycle but I told her we could change places and I’ll just inside beside her friend. She was sitting behind the driver and we were happily riding the tricycle all the way to hardware store when she turned to me and said “Ate, baka kikidnapin mo kami ha, pulis tatay ko.” I told her, again, that I am NOT going to hurt them both and that whatever threat she’s thinking of throwing my way, I’m not going to get scared because I’m not going to do anything to them.

At last, we reached the hardware store and I dropped them off. Girl 2 proceeded to the counter to buy whatever kind of nails they needed and I told them that I’m going to leave them there and to be careful when they go back to wherever they came from. I called my mom to check if they got back okay, and apparently, they’re both alive and well.

So that’s it. The story of how I tried to do a good deed and they mistake me for a kidnapper. Haha! I don’t blame Girl 1, though, in fact I’m happy that she was as alert as she was earlier. At least I know that in the future, if some stranger approaches her without warning, she won’t get into trouble. I wish I could be like her. That was a great experience. :)
